And so to Betty.

The 27-year-old recently reflected on her experience of studying for the Level 3 Certificate in Counselling Studies here at New Futures.

“I have always been interested in counselling and, having received it many times in my life, I recognise how beneficial it is” she says.

“I have struggled with my mental health in the past and suspected I had Autism since I was a teenager, but I wasn’t officially diagnosed until I was 25.

“Starting this course was a big thing for me and I struggled at the beginning getting used to the way the coursework is done compared to previous courses I have done.

“It took me a while, but I have got a good system in place for managing the workload.

“My tutor John Bristow has been amazing! He never gets annoyed when I email him a bunch of questions about the work and he always tries to break tasks down so it’s easier to understand.

“It’s only a small group and we all get on really well. I feel comfortable and can bring topics into practical skills sessions without worrying about judgement.

“I still ‘mask’ a little, but that’s because I spent my whole life masking very heavily.

“I mask less with the group that I do in other settings with people I know less so that shows how much I trust them.

“My confidence has grown massively, I feel so much more confident with my skills and ability as a counsellor.

“I also feel more able to talk about how my Autism affects me and how I can bring it into the counselling space rather than push it out.

“I have already signed up to the Level 4 course but after that I would like to do some work with children and young people.

“I’m really excited about starting the course and doing a placement with real clients.

“I know the workload will increase but I also know how supportive New Futures is so I feel confident that I will manage and do well.

“It would be cool to do future courses so I can bring elements of art, music and therapy animals into the counselling space.

“I have had such a brilliant experience at New Futures, and I love the work they are doing.

“I can’t wait to continue my journey with them and become an even better counsellor.”
