Counselling Saves Lives: 'I've never known a class of such kind and benevolent people' says Isis

Throughout this week, we are highlighting our counselling courses and the places they can take our students.
You will find details of our forthcoming courses here on our website. If you think it's for you, get in touch and we can talk.

Our courses are externally validated and accredited by the Counselling and Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body, (CPCAB).
Teaching takes place at our home in London Road - near Leicester railway station on the outskirts of the city centre - or online.
Today, we turn our attention back to our students.
"I have never known a class of such kind and benevolent people."
That's certainly a glowing endorsement of the counselling courses we offer here at the New Futures Project.
It's from Isis Nickson, who studied Level 2 Counselling Skills here with us earlier this year alongside her master's in Child and Adolescent Mental Health and Wellbeing.
“My goal is to be a child's therapist in the NHS, and I would like to stay with New Futures until I complete my level 5 to reach this goal,” the 22-year-old told us.
“Unfortunately, I've lived through many adversities, and I feel that sends people down one of two paths.
“Some spend their lives trying to get away from what happened, others have their experiences shape their career - this is what happened in my case.
“Mental health is extremely important yet still misunderstood, stigmatised and underfunded.
“I want to help people. I volunteer with three charities across Leicester, and this makes me very happy.”

Now studying for her Level 4 qualification, what does she make of our teaching and support?
“Trish (Ed: Trish Maguire is one of our tutors and a tutor mentor) has absolutely gone above and beyond to provide us with enriching presentations, and is always offering her support.
“She always says to ring her anytime if you need support, which I find very generous and something that many lecturers would not offer.
“She truly respects us. Just because she is more qualified than us, it feels like we're all learning from each other.
“As a group, we have an incredible level of rapport and we all get on very well.
“I have been a student in many different settings - secondary school, sixth form, university, yet I've never known a class of such kind and benevolent people."
The New Futures Project offers a comprehensive welfare and counselling service for women and young people dealing with sexual abuse or exploitation, domestic violence, trafficking, poverty and debt, substance use or mental ill-health.
