Counselling Saves Lives: Jo reflects on their time supporting clients at the New Futures Project

Our courses are externally validated and accredited by the Counselling and Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body, (CPCAB).
Teaching takes place at our home in London Road - near Leicester railway station on the outskirts of the city centre - or online.
Today, we turn our attention to the career opportunities our courses offer.
We spoke to counselling placement student Jo Svec at the end of their counselling placement with us toward the end of last year.
It is plain to see just how much of an impression we had made on them.
Jo earned a BSc in counselling from the University of Derby before taking a further one-year course, also at Derby, to obtain the professional qualification needed to pursue a career as a therapist.
When they were looking for a good place to complete the 100 hours of counselling required to complete the course, a classmate from Leicester suggested us.
We were delighted to welcome Jo and to provide the professional and personal advice and support they needed to thrive during their time with us.
Speaking at the end of the placement, the 25-year-old told us: "New Futures is a great place. I was impressed by everything there.
"Some counselling places can feel a little sterile, but New Futures is so much more cosy and welcoming. It's a place where people come to heal."

In their time they were with us, Jo, who lives in Derby, worked closely with four women who are living with trauma.
"I hadn't worked with such high-risk and complex cases before - but that's the nature of New Futures and the women and young people it works with," they said.
"So, coming here has definitely been a significant step-up for me. It has been fascinating to see how the counselling process works in reality, not in theory.
"Mental health support is still such a young industry. I'd say the UK is at the forefront of this form of care and that is something to be proud of, but there is still so much more we could do."
Our director Della Kagure Brown said: "The project supports women and girls who have experienced significant trauma and abuse and provides crisis and low-cost counselling in addition to practical and emotional support.
"As our counselling training programme is developing and more people are applying to study counselling with us, we want our potential counselling students to understand the real value of training to be a professional counsellor with the New Futures Project.
"Our counselling courses are an intrinsic part of the work of the charity – training counsellors is another way the charity supports vulnerable women and girls.
"We really hope that potential counselling students will be inspired by our slogan and the work of the charity and choose to train with us.
"Training to be a professional counsellor at The New Futures Project supports our work in so many ways.
"All profits from our training courses go towards supporting vulnerable women and girls.
"Our trainee counsellors support our client group directly through completing placements at the charity and most importantly when our trainee counsellors qualify, they continue to use the expertise they have gained through our training within their future practice with clients within the wider community.
"Counsellors training with the New Futures Project will continue to support the work of the charity throughout their career.
"In return we offer a rewarding and worthwhile career and the satisfaction of supporting our clients to achieve their full potential and becoming part of our community.
"Why wouldn’t anyone want to be a counsellor when doing so means they have a career helping them to recover from abuse and trauma and to live with hope and peace?"
The New Futures Project offers a comprehensive welfare and counselling service for women and young people dealing with sexual abuse or exploitation, domestic violence, trafficking, poverty and debt, substance use or mental ill-health.
