Another big donation from our friends at Your Smalls Appeal

The New Futures Project enjoys the support of some wonderful people and organisations - be they private individuals, businesses, community groups, statutory agencies, and other charities.

Our work with hundreds of socially excluded women and young people would suffer if any of those supporters walked away.

One donor which has formed a long-term supportive relationship with us is an organisation called the Your Smalls Appeal – you can visit its website here - which is based here in Leicestershire.

Its founder Diana Esho regularly drops by with stacks of everyday essentials the women we see here are crying out for.

Recenty, Diana arrived at our home in London Road to delivers bags and boxes of face flannels, towels, bras, pants, socks, bathroom essentials, as well as sanitary products.

On this occasion, Diana left behind several large plastics tubs - marked with the appeal's logo - and told us to keep them and to notify her when they need topping up.

This was Your Smalls Appeal's latest lovely gesture of solidarity for the women we see here, so many of whom are, put simply, destitute.

Avril Lewis, crisis support manager at the New Futures Project, said underwear is always popular with the women who use our clothing bank.

Also, personal hygiene and bathroom products are highly sought after because so many of the women we see simply cannot afford them, she said.

Avril said: "We were very happy to see Diana again and we were overwhelmed when we saw what she had brought with her.

"So much thought and care goes into the selection of things she brings into the project. and we are always delighted to give them to the women who need them."

Diana and her team have been providing bras, pants, sanitary pads and other essentials to women and girls around the world, particularly those in developing countries, since 2016.

However, the Covid crisis saw her to broaden the appeal's focus to vulnerable and impoverished women in the UK too.

The group receives donations from a wide range of sources, such as “individual ladies, women connected to local business, networking groups, churches, girls and mums at various schools and colleges, not only in the UK but from across the globe.”

"We financially support a growing number of girls’ access to education by paying tuition fees, school uniforms and school books," they say on their website.

“Over the years we have been supporting an ever-growing group of pregnant women in rural parts of Africa who don’t have easy access to sanitary pads following childbirth.

“These clean vital items help to prevent infection offering a hygienic, clean solution.

“Bras, pants and sanitary pads are provided to the amazing group of professional women from nurses to teachers throughout Africa.

“Period poverty is a real issue for women and girls who don’t have the means, or easy access to local supplies."

They add: “We are still shocked that there are still women in the world who do not have access to this basic item of clothing.”

The New Futures Project offers a comprehensive welfare and counselling service for women and young people dealing with sexual abuse or exploitation, domestic violence, trafficking, poverty and debt, substance use or mental ill-health.
